Protection for fixed-term workers
Filling in a form
Under the law all dismissals should be subject to provisions
Jersey's Employment Forum has recommended workers on fixed-term contracts should have similar protection to those in permanent jobs.

The forum has been considering how the island's new employment law will work in practice when it comes into force next year.

Employers, business representatives and other interested parties were consulted on issues raised by its implementation.

The forum's recommendations will form the basis of the new regulations.

Too often

Twenty-seven responses were received from interested parties on the issue of unfair dismissal for workers on fixed-term contracts.

The Employment Forum concluded that if a fixed-term worker's contract ended it could be considered a dismissal.

Under the law the dismissal should be subject to the provisions determining whether it was fair or unfair.

In reaching its findings, the forum says some industries are using fixed-term contracts too often and not for their intended purpose of employing someone for a limited period.
