Adults in Jersey will be paid a minimum of just over �5 an hour under proposals for a minimum wage. The level of the minimum wage is just one aspect of the island's employment laws which have been debated recently.
But the issue has proved controversial with different parties in Jersey arguing over whether it is necessary.
If the new law is adopted, workers must be paid at least �5.08 an hour with trainees and younger people getting �3.82. Unions had wanted �6 an hour.
A number of union leaders have described the predicted level of the wage as "disappointing".
If approved, the law will take effect from April 2005.
