There are an estimated 800 heroin addicts on Jersey |
An organisation which helps people in Jersey who are battling addictions to drugs or alcohol has received a funding boost of 20,000. The Jersey Addiction Group is to use the money to fund a rehabilitation programme for four addicts.
It costs about 600 a week to treat a substance abuser. The centre says its success rate in helping people come off drugs is about 81%.
The money has come from the Association of Jersey Charities and the States.
Life opportunities
People who go through the Jersey Addiction Group's programme normally stay at a centre for eight to 12 weeks and also receive after care for a year.
Programme Director Ian Roger said the number of people on Jersey with drug and alcohol problem means the need for money is very great.
The island has an estimated 800 people with a heroin addiction alone.
Ian Roger said: "The main thing that we actually offer is an opportunity for people to get their life back together again.
"The donation will give people the opportunity to try and get quality back in their life without drugs or alcohol."
Some of the money provided by the States has come from criminal assets that have been confiscated.
Some drug and alcohol addicts from Guernsey are now being sent to Jersey because treatment on the island is cheaper than in the UK.
