Warders could get arrest powers
La Moye Prison sign
The prison is trying to motivate people to give up drug habits
Prison officers could soon be able to arrest people in Jersey.

Currently prison officers cannot arrest people inside La Moye, and should a criminal act be committed they have to wait for States Police to arrive.

The main aim of the new law is to allow prison officers the power to detain people suspected of carrying in drugs.

Prison officers in the UK have had the power of arrest since the 1950s, but in Jersey officers could only refuse entry to people.

Plans to give officers the power of arrest at the prison have been put forward to the States 18 months after the proposals were first announced.

The move comes as the inmates testing positive for drugs is falling.

If inmates pass three tests a month, they are entitled to special privileges like better living conditions and the chance to work in the community.
