Garden project 'will continue'

A woman leading plans to restore a Victorian garden in Jersey insists the project will continue despite a major setback over funding.

A group hoping to restore the gardens at the Chateau La Chaire at Rozel was due to set up a trust and ask for 80,000 of States funding.

But a decision not to seek States support was made following a meeting between the garden's trustees and UK gardening expert Angie Petkovic.

Ms Petkovic said she was sure someone would take the project on.

Withdrawn concerns

"It is so important for Jersey and such a major part of the island's heritage," she said.

"Even if it is not me that's involved, it will happen.

"There is too much happening and links going on around the world for it not to."

Deputy Gerald Voisin said that no Trust would be formed for the project.

He added that if any public money was to be used, the matter would be debated in the States.

"My committee and I are happy to give this undertaking because we realise that an important project like this should receive the full backing and support of this assembly if it is to be successful."

Town Constable Simon Crowcroft has now withdrawn his concerns about the amount of taxpayers' money being spent on the project.
