Garden restoration gets go-ahead
The garden at Chateau La Chaire Hotel at Rozel

A rediscovered Victorian garden in Jersey could be open to the public by the end of the year.

But it could cost about 1.6m to start the restoration process.

The garden at the Chateau La Chaire Hotel in Rozel has been described as one of the most important in Europe.

Five months into a study to see whether the project to restore it was feasible, the group backing the scheme has decided to go ahead.

Having already spent about 70,000, it is hoping to raise 1.6m for the first stage of the process.

Restoration projects

It plans to launch a fund-raising campaign.

The study included experts who have been involved in similar garden restoration projects elsewhere, including Tim Smit from the Eden Project and Mike Nelhams from Tresco Abbey in the Isles of Scilly.

The garden was designed by Victorian horticulturalist Samuel Curtis.

It is thought that, once restored, the garden will feature among the top 10 in Europe.
