Jersey post defends price rises
Letter being posted
Post prices will increase in April
Jersey Post has defended its decision to increase postal charges from next April.

Following criticism from islanders, managers at the island's post office have reassured customers the rise in prices is beyond their control.

Helen Hart from Jersey Post says stamps will go up next year because a subsidy on local deliveries, from income raised on mail leaving the island, will come to an end.

The price of a local stamp will rise by 3p to 32p while a stamp to the UK will cost 33p.

International mail

In 2002 Jersey Post announced the Royal Mail wanted 9m over three years to continue handling post from the island.

In March, it introduced the first set of price rises to help meet the cost. Now it says the new increases, which will take effect on 6 April, are also needed.

Parcels and packages will cost up to 10% more depending on their weight.

Sending international mail, including postcards and aerogrammes, will rise by up to 2.6%.
