Men shy of speed-dating
Young people
Organisers hope to have some successful matches
A speed dating event in Jersey has had to be postponed because men seem to be too shy to attend.

The event was due to take place on Tuesday evening.

About 70 women want to take part, but so far there have not been enough male applicants.

Organisers say it could be because single men in Jersey are disorganised and have not got their applications in on time, or that they are just too timid.

Score cards

Speed dating is a form of a blind date and involves "mini dates".

Women sit at tables and are joined by a man for a few minutes. At the sound of a bell or a call, it is all change for the next mini-date.

Each person decides whether they would see the other again and ticks a "yes" or no "box" on score cards. The results are collated and successful matches can then be arranged after the night.

Speed dating started in January 1999 in Los Angeles as a scheme for Jewish singles to meet, and quickly caught on in New York.

In Jersey, it is hoped the dating sessions will become a weekly event for anyone over the age of 20, if men are feeling less timid about going.
