Call for clamp on 'cowboys'
Builder
Mark Palfrey think States spending cuts have reduced work
The leader of Jersey's building industry is calling for construction workers to carry some form of document which details their skills and experience.

Mark Palfrey, president of the Jersey Building and Allied Trade Employers Federation, says it would help remove so-called "cowboys".

He claims it is difficult to know how competent people applying for employment are and so every time someone starts a new job, they have to be trained.

He said a document which identified people's work background would help people ensure they are employing professional staff.

In the meantime, it is claimed enquiries about building projects in Jersey have halved in the past 18 months.

Mr Palfrey said that he thought it was a quiet time in the construction industry and some tradesman are finding it hard to get a job.

He said he thinks cuts in States spending could be a reason.
