Walkers start 85-mile parish trek

2008 Parish Walk
The race dates back to 1852

More than 1,600 competitors have set off on the annual 85-mile walk round the Isle of Man.

They are aiming to complete the Clerical Medical Parish Walk, which visits all 17 parish churches on the island within 24 hours.

Organiser Raymond Cox said he was delighted with the race's growing popularity.

"Over the past 20 years we've seen a huge increase in interest for our event," Mr Cox said.

The Clerical Medical Parish Walk is an established sporting event dating back to 1852.

Each competitor is subject to race-walking rules and must complete the 85 miles within 24 hours.

Mr Cox added: "People are more interested in exercise and health generally and therefore an event like this captures the imagination.

"It's one hell of a challenge."
