Almost 1,600 people braved torrential rain and strong winds to take part in the 2008 Isle of Man Parish Walk.

The annual 85-mile race takes in 17 parish churches around the island's coast in a time limit of 24 hours.

A record 1,598 people entered the 2008 event, with 121 walkers crossing the line at Douglas Promenade on Sunday before the 0800 BST cut off point.

The race was won by Jock Waddington in a time of 15 hours, 44 minutes and 43 seconds. He said he was "thrilled".

After crossing the line, Mr Waddington said the weather "was not good" and admitted surprise at his success.

"I am a bit lost for words really but I'm thrilled to bits - really, really, really thrilled," he said.

"I didn't think it would happen but sometimes luck is on your side."

Mr Waddington finished about 25 minutes ahead of favourite - and the 2007 winner - Robbie Callister.
