Fast craft bought by Steam Packet

Ben my Chree, Viking and Snaefell in Douglas Harbour
The vessel will start operating from next year

A fast catamaran has been bought by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for its busy Liverpool route.

The ship, currently known as Incat 050, will replace the Viking and will primarily service the seasonal Liverpool to Douglas route.

The 96m (314ft) catamaran will be the largest vessel of its type in the Irish Sea, the company said.

Chief Executive Mark Woodward said the purchase was "a real step forward". It will begin operating next year.

Mr Woodward added: "Over the past few years, we have looked at a number of possible vessels and we believe we have found the craft that most ideally meets our requirements for a versatile, high capacity vessel which is capable of serving our passengers expectations for increased comfort and reliability."

The vessel will be able to carry lorries and coaches.
