Islanders to tour new Manx jail

The new jail at Jurby
Thousands of people have jumped at the chance to tour the new jail

Thousands of people have jumped at the chance to take an inside peek at the Isle of Man's new prison in Jurby.

The 41.7m jail will be throwing open its doors over two consecutive weekends at the end of April and beginning of May for a series of open days.

Reservations for the 2,400 places were made available last Monday and have all been snapped up in just a week.

A reserve list is now being put together in case anyone who has a place drops out.

The jail, which will replace the old prison at Victoria Road, Douglas, is expected to be operational in May.

Senior prison officer Karl Christian said: "The phones were constant for the first 12 or so hours last Monday, which fully occupied two members of staff when bookings started being taken.

"We'd ask anyone who has booked but is unable to visit at the allocated time to contact us so that someone on the reserve list can be invited to take their place."
