The Chief Probation Officer on the Isle of Man has said building a new prison on the island will provide better rehabilitation for prisoners. David Sellick said the current facility on Victoria Road in Douglas is past its sell-by date and offers nothing constructive for prisoners.
Work on the new prison at Jurby is due to be completed in November 2007.
Mr Sellick said it will give prisoners the chance to study in workshops. "In education lies salvation," he said.
"The more people are skilled up, the better opportunities they have and the more potential they can fill," he added.
