Thanks for directory 'mountain'
Andrew Honour from Manx Telecom and Joanne Hetherington, from the DLGE with the recycled telephone book mountain
More than 14 tonnes of directories were collected
Manx householders have been praised for their part in creating a mountain of used telephone directories.

More than 14,000 directories weighing more than 14 tonnes have been collected in this year's recycling drive.

The scheme was jointly funded by The Department of Local Government and the Environment (DLGE) and Manx Telecom.

The DLGE's Recycling Officer, Joanne Hetherington, said she was delighted with the response and thanked everyone who recycled their 2005 directory.

Ms Hetherington added that the DLGE aimed to expand future collection facilities.

More than 11 tonnes of directories were collected from householders via recycling bins placed across the Island and the remaining three tonnes were collected directly from offices and government departments.

All directories were taken to a local company, Doxbond at Balthane, Ballasalla for onward shipment and recycling.

And the recycling continues because Isle of Man Newspapers Ltd buys its newsprint from a UK company that has been recycling the Manx phonebooks.
