Tributes have been paid to a young cyclist who was killed when he was hit by a lorry wheel on the way home from a training ride on the Isle of Man.

James Berry, 13, of Governors Hill, Douglas, was among a group of cyclists on the A1 when the accident happened near the Hawthorne pub at Greeba.

British Cycling organiser Dot Tilbury said James would be "greatly missed".

James had been co-opted onto British Cycling's 2006 Talent team even though officially he was a year too young.

His achievements include overall victory in the 2004 Kerry Youth Tour, a silver medal in British Cycling's 2004 national youth circuit race championships and a bronze medal in British Cycling's 2004 national youth track championships.

'Devastated'

He also won second place overall in British Cycling's 2004 national youth circuit race series and was top 13-year-old in the national final of the 2005 GHS 10-mile time trial championship.

Ms Tilbury said: "We are all devastated over James' very tragic death and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

"He will be greatly missed by everyone".

Police said the wheel that hit James became detached from a lorry travelling towards them in Thursday's accident.

James, a member of the Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man, died later in hospital.
