The States overspent by �1.4m at Beau Sejour

The Public Accounts Committee last week heard how the �9m budget for renovation works at the island's leisure centre rose to �10.4m.

Its findings will be presented to the States for debate in the autumn.

Committee chairman Deputy Rhoderick Matthews said no further comment would be made before the report is published.

Sea wall

Beau Sejour is one of five major contracts in Guernsey which have gone over budget in the last couple of years.

A new airport terminal, a new jetty in St Peter Port, St Sampson's Marina and St Sampson's fire main are together more than �7m over budget.

In addition, contractors have put in claims for another �19.5m to be negotiated with the States.

One politician has made a new call for public spending to be curbed on what he sees as unnecessary projects.

The Vale's Deputy, Dave Jones, said he was angry that at a time when States departments were being asked to reduce expenditure, money was being wasted on work such as raising the sea wall at La Salerie Corner.

States builders have just submitted an application for the sea wall work to be carried out.

Deputy Jones described such spending as "mindless and unnecessary".

Meanwhile, it is hoped some savings can be made by moving two health departments to under one roof.

The States' analysts laboratory and the Environmental Health office have both moved into new premises in Longue Rue in St Martin.

Health Minister Peter Roffey officially opened the building on Tuesday.
