Port Soif was one of three beaches given the top grade by the guide |
Guernsey's beaches are safe and clean according to an island politician. It was revealed last week Guernsey achieved 3 Good Beach Guide Awards at L'Eree, Port Soif, and Grandes Rocques. Jersey was given 11 awards.
The Marine Conservation Society says there were no failures in the islands for the fourth time in five years.
But Deputy Bill Bell, the Minister for the Public Services Department, says the awards are misleading and all beaches meet stringent EU standards.
The society believes at least twice as many of Guernsey's beaches would have received commendations if it had secondary sewage treatment facilities.
The campaign group, Surfers Against Sewage, claims some Guernsey beaches do not meet the standards its members expect as recreational water bathers and users.
