A review panel said the proposed waste plant was too big |
Guernsey's Environment Minister has said that plans for a waste disposal incinerator have not been shelved. Bernard Flouquet's comments come after Deputy Scott Ogier said there had been a fundamental change in thinking on waste disposal in the island.
Deputy Ogier has campaigned against plans for an incinerator at Long Hougue in St Sampson.
Deputy Flouquet said although advice from an independent panel was being looked into, all options were open.
Option confidence
A report by the Waste to Energy Plant inquiry panel earlier this year concluded a proposed 80m scheme at Long Hougue was the wrong choice for Guernsey.
It recommended taking longer to explore alternative technologies and increasing recycling.
Deputy Ogier said that this coincided with recycling becoming more popular on the island.
He said: "There has been quite a shift away from incineration and towards recycling and it is a real gut change."
However, Deputy Flouquet said that the report recommended exploring all alternatives and that was exactly what he was doing - including looking at incineration.
He said: "All options are still open to us.
"My department does not have enough confidence in any of the alternatives for us to recommend any of those solutions to Guernsey as this present time."
