Police step up recruitment drive
Guernsey Police Station
Guernsey police want to recruit a total of 20 new officers
Police in Guernsey are hoping that a recruitment drive will help bolster their ranks.

The force has set itself a target to recruit 10 extra officers this year.

The figures are revealed in the force's Policing Plan 2005 and follow calls from politicians and the public for more bobbies on the beat.

It is hoped 20 new officers will be recruited in total to help tackle a range of problems from drug and alcohol abuse to anti-social behaviour.

The States say there should be an established strength of 177 officers but that figure has never yet been met.

The plan also includes a major upgrade of the St Peter Port's CCTV system and more high visibility patrols as Chief Officer George Le Page looks to step up police presence on the island's streets.

Other initiatives, such as extending neighbourhood watch schemes and a crackdown on speeding to reduce the number of serious road accidents, are also covered in the report.
