States fired up for smoking ban
Smoking
Smoking may be banned in pubs and restaurants
Guernsey States will begin deliberating on Wednesday whether tough new smoking bans will be introduced in the island.

The Health and Social Services Department wants to make smoking illegal in all enclosed public areas, and in the workplace.

The proposals follow lengthy consultation with States departments and medical professionals.

If a ban is endorsed, at least a year's notice will be given to allow landlords to prepare outdoor smoking areas.

The call for a complete ban has been prompted by new evidence of the health risks from passive smoking, the need to protect all workers, and the relative success of similar bans elsewhere.

All the arguments have now been heard for and against a complete ban and a decision is expected by Thursday at the latest.

If it is agreed that a total ban is not appropriate, States members may approve a modified option which would see smoking only banned in public places where food is served.
