Minister confident of smoking ban
Smoking
The proposals follow lengthy consultations
Health officials in Guernsey say they are confident the States will accept a smoking ban in enclosed public places.

The Board of Health attempted to get a ban on smoking in eateries in 2002.

But the States instead opted only to force establishments to display notices stating whether or not smoking is allowed on the premises.

Deputy Health Minister David Grut said he now believed there had been a massive change in public opinion over the last few years.

The new Department of Health is bringing the issue back before the States later this month.

Deputy Grut believes this time the legislation will be passed as the debate has since shifted since 2002 in favour of the rights of non-smokers to be protected from second-hand smoke.

However, a compromise deal has been tabled which would only cover places that serve food.
