States set to debate smoking ban
Smoking
The proposals follow lengthy consultations
Tough bans on smoking could be introduced in Guernsey if the States agrees to new proposals.

The Health and Social Services Department wants to make smoking illegal in all enclosed public places, and in the workplace.

The proposals follow lengthy consultations with States departments and medical professionals.

It is proposed one year's notice should be given to allow landlords time to prepare outdoor smoking areas.

The call for a complete ban has been prompted by new evidence of the health risks from passive smoking, the need to protect all workers, and the relative success of similar bans in countries like Norway and Ireland.

The law would include restaurants, bars and clubs.

The Health and Social Services Department is also putting forward a second-best alternative which would ban smoking only in public places where food is served.

The proposals will be debated when the States meet at the end of March.
