But States member Geoff Mahy says the amendment will not necessarily give employers any legal protection.

And he claims the clause would not be acceptable in the UK.

Last week, some Guernsey publicans said they were considering asking new staff to sign an agreement to show they are happy to work in a smoky atmosphere.

It follows concerns about employees threatening legal action if they develop smoking-related health problems.
