Fear of crime forces shop closure
Shop shelves
A former shopkeeper is calling for plain-clothed police to patrol stores
A Guernsey shopkeeper is forfeiting her business because of fears she could become a victim of crime.

Karen Greening has closed New Grange Stores in St Peter Port after owning it for just four months.

Ms Greening says a recent series of knifepoint robberies in the island has made her fear that, despite installing CCTV, her shop could be next.

She wants more to be done to protect businesses in the area like having plain-clothed police on duty.

Protection needed

"The police could install a plain-clothed officer, say, filling shelves or such like," she said.

"It would be a good step to take for other people who are running their own small businesses.

"Now that I've closed the shop, I do feel for those people out there and I do think they need protecting," she added.

The chairman of Guernsey's police association has recently hit back at criticism of the force's policing of the island.

John Tostevin said the force is understaffed and has never been at its full complement of 177 officers.
