Fears over new schools 'ignored'
Traffic jam
There are concerns local roads will not cope with any increased traffic
Fears over safety and traffic problems in Guernsey, which may be caused by the building of a new school, are being ignored, according to one islander.

Philip Miles, who lives at Les Effards, claims there is no evidence that concerns raised with the island's politicians were taken into account.

The 47m new school complex is to be built at Les Beaucamps.

Guernsey's Education Minister Martin Ozanne, refutes the claims and suggests it is time for more positive thinking.

Best job

"I wish people would have a little bit of faith," he said.

"Yes, we have been listening and we have come up with, we believe, the best solution.

"It's not set in concrete yet and there's still some work to do and the school won't be opened for another two and a half years.

"We believe that it's now time for people to allow us to get on with it and do the best job that we can," he added.

Twenty residents attended the public meeting on Wednesday 9 February. Some were concerned that the island's roads would not cope with any increase in traffic.

The project to build the new 720-pupil Les Nicolles School should be open in 2007.

It will replace St Sampson's secondary, and help prepare for the redrafting of catchment areas when St Peter Port School closes.

A special needs school will be built at the same site for Mont Varouf and Oakdale pupils.
