Deputy Ogier claims a thermal plant would take half the time to build
A Guernsey deputy is attempting to overturn the decision to build a waste-to-energy plant at Long Hougue.

Deputy Scott Ogier has placed a last minute requette calling for the States to reconsider the decision to build the 72m plant.

He believes there are cheaper and quicker alternatives and says the island is being panicked into building the plant.

Mr Ogier said some of the alternatives could take half the time to complete.

We could have a thermal treatment plant up and running before the incinerator.

"It takes four years to implement a mass burn incinerator and some of the alternatives can take as little as two years," he said.

"If we got a decision to go with an alternative, we could have a thermal treatment plant up and running before the incinerator.

"The time scales are very much different and we've got until 2014 before Mont Cuet fills up."

Guernsey's Environment Minister, Deputy Bernard Flouquet, says he is not prepared to comment until his department has considered the details of the requette.
