Those in charge of the work say they have kept a close eye on the demolition due to the close proximity of the old building to the runway.

Concrete recovered from the demolition will be crushed and used as a foundation for new aircraft parking.

Guernsey's new airport terminal, which replaces the island's 65-year-old former building, opened for business last month.

Airport Director Colin Le Ray said: "After the demolition, the foundations will be excavated from the old terminal building. The area will then be hardcored down and there will be parking built for aircraft.

"But it will have to be up to a certain specification to take the weight of the aircraft.

"The concrete apron for the aircraft parking will be put in throughout the summer."

Rubble from the old building will also be used in other island building projects.
