Support for non-elected members
Guernsey States
Each department is allowed to appoint some non-States members
Some Guernsey residents have voiced support for the appointment of non-elected representatives to the States.

In a BBC Guernsey survey, they said the need for more experience and expertise in the island's government justified unelected representatives.

These people would give advice but not vote on States decisions.

However, the use of non-States members has provoked controversy. At least one politician, Deputy Eric Walters, has branded the move as "undemocratic".

In the new look government, each of its 10 departments is allowed to appoint some non-States members.
