Euthanasia referendum proposed

Guernsey currently forbids any form of euthanasia in the island
A senior Guernsey politician says he believes the debate on legalising voluntary euthanasia should be decided by the public.

Deputy Lyndon Trott is planning to bring an amendment before the States at its meeting on 27 October, proposing the island's first ever referendum.

Deputy Trott believes voluntary euthanasia is such a divisive issue that a public vote is the right move.

But he does not think the vote's result would be legally binding on the States.

However, he admits the outcome would be extremely difficult for the States to ignore.

Guernsey's Policy Committee recently decided not to change the law which forbids any form of euthanasia in the island.
