Euthanasia law change ruled out

Deputy Pat Mellor brought a requete on 'Death With Dignity'
Guernsey's most senior committee is ruling out a change in the law to allow any form of euthanasia in the island.

The Policy Council is recommending the States accepts the findings of a working party which has spent the last two years preparing its report.

The report is in response to a requete on 'Death With Dignity' brought by Deputy Pat Mellor in September 2002.

The working party was asked to look at the implications of allowing islanders some form of assisted death.

The majority view on the council was to leave the laws outlawing euthanasia as they are.

However, the Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Peter Roffey, disagrees with that standpoint.

He says he has produced a minority report recommending a limited and strictly proscribed system of voluntary euthanasia based on a model used in the USA.
