Police target pavement 'surfers'
Guernsey police car
Guernsey police say they will be watching the whole island
Motorists in Guernsey are being targeted in a police crackdown on so-called pavement surfing.

Police aim to make life safer for pedestrians on the island where driving on the pavements in narrow streets has become a major issue.

Road safety groups have called for tougher laws to deter vehicles from driving along pavements at speed.

Traffic Inspector Ashley Nicholas said police officers will be making checks all over the island.

He said: "We are not going to target any particular blackspot, but clearly there are areas that are known to us as being worse than others.

"What we don't want to do is create rat-runs."

Brian Le Feuvre, general manager of Island Coachways, admitted last year that his drivers regularly use the island's pavements.

Mr Le Feuvre said because of narrow streets and parking, mounting the kerb was part and parcel of driving a large vehicle locally.
