Bus boss defiant

Island Coachways says drivers use common sense
Driving on Guernsey's pavements is here to stay according to the island's bus company.

Brian Le Feuvre, general manager of Island Coachways, admitted his drivers regularly use the island's pavements, despite it being against the law.

Police have vowed to clamp down on law breakers.

But Mr Le Feuvre said that because of narrow streets and parking, mounting the kerb was part and parcel of driving a large vehicle locally.

He said: "I won't be popular for saying this, but that is the case.

"It doesn't matter what anyone says, or anyone tries to enforce - they could pull a few people and it would stop it for a while - but it would only be for a while.

"Driving on the pavement in Guernsey is a fact of life, and it will always be there.

"But we believe our drivers use a lot of common sense."

Guernsey's new buses came under fire earlier this year for being too large for the island's smaller roads.

But Mr Le Feuvre said: "What I would like to see is parking on the pavement stopped, because that causes more trouble than the driving.

"Everybody would like to see vehicles not on the pavements, but the roads will not take it."
