Plutonium reassurances to islands
BNFL ship the Pacific Pintail
The Pacific Pintail will be one vessel used to transport the metal
A spokesman for a company planning to ship plutonium past the Channel Islands says there is no risk to the area.

Next month weapons-grade material will be shipped from Charleston in the USA to Cherbourg, France.

Once in Cherbourg, the material will be processed into nuclear fuel. Environmental campaigners have voiced their concern over the shipment.

Cogema-Areva says their fears are unjustified because it will be transported under heavy security.

Two armed British Nuclear Fuels Limited ships carrying the plutonium, Pacific Pintail and Pacific Teal, will pass within 50km (30 miles) of Jersey and Guernsey.

Cogema-Areva said the substance would be transported under heavy security in specially-designed containers.

Henri-Jacques Neau said: "It is not dangerous on its own when it is on ships, on trucks or on railways.

"This material is not a bomb, it is not something which can explode."
