The views of Guernsey's health workers are being sought by a group investigating voluntary euthanasia in the island. A small survey of family doctors, medical specialists and nurses took place early on the research of the Death with Dignity Working Party, but it was felt that more research is needed.
A much larger number of people will now be questioned on their views on euthanasia.
The working party has already had an enthusiastic response to its invitation to members of the public to give their opinions.
It is hoping to draw on the extensive experience which the island's health workers have of dealing with those who are terminally ill.
The Primary Care Committee's representative on the working party, Dr Robbie Hanna, said it was important to gauge the feeling among health professionals given the seriousness of the issue and the emotion involved.
He said: "They're dealing with these difficult situations day in and day out, and we are encountering people who are terminally and chronically ill, so our opinion is important.
"But it's only part of a wider opinion, and really it is ultimately up to the people of Guernsey if they want to change legislation."
The working party hopes to submit its report to the Advisory and Finance Committee by the end of March.
