Traders warn of parking problems
St Sampson's Harbour
Work is being carried out at a marina in St Sampson's
Businesses in part of Guernsey are considering uniting to address the effects of developments in the area.

Work on St Sampson's marina is nearing completion and construction of an Energy from Waste plant will begin shortly.

There are also plans to re-develop the area of Leale's Yard, including the possible pedestrianisation of The Bridge.

Traders around The Bridge are now thinking of forming an association because of what they say are growing concerns at the number of projects and the effect they will have on local parking and their businesses.

I was disappointed that he thought that traders had to get together, because they already had
Deputy Roy Bisson
Ron Le Moignan, who owns a business on St Sampson's South Side, said there were reservations amongst some businesses about the number and type of projects.

Mr Le Moignan said he did not think adequate thought was put into plans and there was growing apprehension about possible negative effects they will have on businesses, particularly car parking.

He said: "Down in town there is considerable parking, but not on The Bridge."

"There's going to be an erosion of car parking, not only for the customers, and we always think of the customers, but also for all the staff of traders."

He also claimed most people are not objecting to plans simply because they do not fully understand them.

But Deputy Roy Bisson said there had been lots of opportunities for traders to have their say.

He said: "The amount of parking was discussed ad nauseum.

"The plans were shown to the people and a lot of traders came to the IDC (Island Development Committee) and said 'That's great' and 'These are our thoughts on the matter', and all of those were recorded and worked on."

"So, I was disappointed that he thought that traders had to get together, because they already had."

The company Lurgi UK Limited has started work on the construction of the Energy from Waste facility at Longue Hougue in St Sampson's.

It is hoped to get the plant finished and up and running for late 2006.
