Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who was the German foreign minister in 1989, has spoken to the BBC about what Europe's major players thought about the reunification of Germany.
He said there were "some differences" between British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd and Margaret Thatcher about reunifying Germany.
The Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and East and West Germany were formally reunited the next year.
