It was a moment of great historical importance - another crack in the Berlin wall which divided the communist east from the capitalist west. Twenty years ago, thousands of East Germans began to move into Austria after fleeing their homeland.
At midnight, on 10 September 1989, the Hungarian authorities opened their borders and thousands of people left the communist bloc. Thousands more East Germans fled to the West German embassy in Prague, eventually they were put on special trains and taken to the West.
Brian Hanrahan reported on the fall of the Berlin Wall at the time and has been to Dresden in Germany to see why it became so important in Europe's Revolution.
