France's president has welcomed moves to end hostilities between Russia and Georgia, after talks in Moscow.
Nicolas Sarkozy said he hoped the temporary halt to hostilities could become permanent and spoke of the need to build trust between the parties.
His comments came after he met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in his role as the current EU president, to discuss a way forward in the conflict.
The Russian leader called on Georgia to withdraw its troops to their original positions, saying "the ball is now in Tbilisi's court".
