Many of Guernsey's current traffic lights date back to the 1970s |
All of Guernsey's traffic lights are to be replaced over the next three years. The States agreed to the 1.7m project last year and work is due to begin next week.
It is hoped the new system will solve maintenance problems and reduce congestion.
The current lights date back to the 1970s and spare parts have become difficult to source, meaning many have remained out of action for long periods.
Pedestrian friendly
The new system can be set to take account of traffic patterns to allow vehicles to flow more smoothly at peak times.
It also has a remote monitoring system to detect faults and the lights can identify emergency and priority vehicles to allow them through.
The system will also be more pedestrian-friendly and many new crossing points are to be put in.
The first to be replaced will be at the junction of Footes Lane, Les Bassieres and Les Ozouets while the schools are on half term.
The Traffic Committee said it has been liaising with the Utilities Department and developers so the work can be timed to coincide with other maintenance and cause minimum disruption.
