Roadworks anger taxi drivers

The Traffic Committee took over co-ordinating roadworks in the summer
Taxi drivers have expressed their anger at traffic chaos in Guernsey.

Guernsey Taxi Owners' Federation president Chris Lowe said roadworks in the island could not get much worse.

He said the large number of roadworks meant taxi fares were going up in the island.

That was because drivers were sitting in traffic for more time and had to follow long diversion routes to get where they wanted to go.

The Traffic Committee took over the co-ordination of roadworks during the summer.

Increased charges

But Mr Lowe said he did not believe the new system was working at the moment, although he conceded it may need more time to bed in.

He said the delays and increased charges were frustrating for both drivers and passengers, although the customers did understand the problems.

Mr Lowe also expressed concern about the island's traffic lights system.

He said the Traffic Committee promised to replace them about three years ago, but he believed drivers were jumping the lights more often because they did not want to have to wait for them to change.
