Taxi drivers angry at increase

The Traffic Committee has proposed a 4.7% increase in fares
Guernsey taxi drivers are unhappy with a fare increase being proposed by island politicians.

The Traffic Committee plans to raise the standard charge by 4.7%.

Although the rise is in line with increases in the cost of living, the president of the Taxi Federation, Chris Lowe, said the figure was not high enough.

He said the rise did not cover the cost of keeping the island's fleet of taxis on the road.

Mr Lowe said the independent auditors carrying out the study of local fares were using the wrong figures to calculate their recommendations.

He said drivers wanted to see the cost of running a taxi included in the calculations.

They also wanted the creation of a Guernsey taxi retail price index which would help future fare increases to be set.
