There are expected to 250 inmates at La Moye by the end of the year |
Jersey's Home Affairs Committee is to have an independent review into the island's prison system. The review comes after incidents of inmates abusing escorted leave, as well as the release of new figures about the prison's population.
The figures show 220 people are currently in prison and about 30 more are expected this year.
Tax payers are paying about 32,000 for every inmate in prison.
Official standards
They also paid 38,000 for each of 31 prisoners being incarcerated in the UK because of overcrowding at La Moye.
The figures also reveal that Jersey has more than double the number of prisoners in jail than the UK per head of population.
The facility La Moye was originally built to hold just 140 inmates.
However, a new wing is being built, which the Home Affairs Committee said will bring the prison up to official standards.
The committee has announced the review and changes to the island's prison system after various incidents this year of inmates abusing their escorted home leave rules.
Five people attempted to abscond this year while on home visits.
Senator Wendy Kinnard, president of the Home Affairs Committee, said home leave is to continue to be suspended, but inmates will still be tagged and released back into the community.
