Prisoners to be vetted for trips
La Moye Prison
There have been five escapes this year
Jersey's prison authorities are hoping a new system will stop inmates escaping while on home visits.

A new panel will vet requests for escorted visits by prisoners.

It comes after five separate escapes from custody on the island this year.

In the latest escape, 24-year-old Darren McCormack, was on an escorted home visit when he ran away earlier in the month.

Essential trips

Since he ran away from his escorting officer, there has been no trace of him, except for a tip-off that may have reached the continent.

Now the Home Affairs Committee has approved new vetting procedure for requests from inmates.

Those who may be considered as more likely to try and escape may have such visits curtailed.

Committee president Senator Wendy Kinnard said she did not expect the new rules to go down well with inmates, but also said essential trips to hospital and court will remain.
