Only approved headstones are now allowed for graves |
Campaigners have warned they will take legal action against Guernsey's States in an attempt to keep control over their relatives' graves at the Foulon Cemetery. The Board of Administration is warning relatives of people buried at the cemetery to take away loose flowers, ornaments, and memorials.
Approved headstones and vases sitting on them are now the only memorials allowed.
Relatives have been told offending items will be removed after 31 December.
Campaigners against the new directive want locals to be able to remember their relatives with fitting memorials.
Outraged father
They say that they will be prosecuting the States for vandalism if the graves are tampered with.
Trevor Kirk, whose son is buried at the graveyard, has launched the campaign because he is so outraged by what the Board of Administration are doing.
He said: "Why, when these things have been allowed for hundreds of years are they trying to change the rules?
"It's the only thing we can do for our son."
The Board says that graveyard workers can no longer keep all of the cemetery clean and tidy because of an increase in unapproved ornaments and flowers.
