Oil warning for island's beaches
The tanker Prestige
The oil is thought to be coming from the sunken tanker Prestige
More oil could be washed up on Jersey beaches if the wind direction changes.

That is the warning from the island's Public Services Department.

Less oil has been washed up in the last few days.

But Public Services says there is no guarantee the island will not be affected by more.

Oil started being washed up on Jersey's coast last month.

Clean-up operation

It is thought to have come from the tanker Prestige that sank off the coast of northern Spain last year.

Public Services says the clean-up operation is still going on, but less than a bucketful of oil is being collected from the beaches each day.

That is compared to half a tonne in each of the two shifts of beachcombing earlier this month.

It is thought that if the wind direction changes to a south-westerly or westerly wind, there is a chance more oil could be washed ashore.

The Public Services Department has put up red signs in St Ouens Bay, St Brelades Bay and St Aubin's Bay to warn people of the oil.
