Conservationist appalled at pollution
Oil pollution
Signs have been put up warning people of the pollution
A conservationist says he is appalled at the amount of oil being washed up on Jersey beaches.

Jez Payne, who is chairman of Jersey's Beachwatch group, is concerned up to half a ton of oily waste is being taken off the beaches every day by public services.

The amount of oil being washed up around Jersey's shores has greatly increased in recent weeks.

Public Services beach cleaning teams are having to work overtime and use diggers to clear the mess.

'Bad news'

But Municipal Services director Chris Sampson says they are struggling to cope.

Mr Payne said the pollution was bad news for the island.

The Public Services department says it is trying to keep people informed of where the oil is and has put up red signs in St Ouens Bay, St Brelades Bay and St Aubin's Bay.

It is not known where the oil is coming from.

But there is speculation it could be from the sunken French tanker Prestige, which sank off the Spanish coast last year.
