Only two shooting stars were recorded in the Guernsey sky |
An expected shower of meteors failed to materialise in the Guernsey sky on Monday night. The Perseus shower is normally one of the brightest and most reliable astronomical displays of the year.
But a combination of misty skies and a full moon prevented most of the shooting stars being visible and left star gazers frustrated.
Only two shooting stars were recorded, compared to hundreds in previous years.
The meteors come from the Swift-Tuttle Comet and travel at about 45 miles per second.
However, they are too small to break through the earth's atmosphere.
Members of the La Societe Guernesiaise astronomy section gathered at St Peter's observatory for the annual meteor count, but were disappointed.
