Guernsey's Mont Cuet landfill rubbish site is filling up |
Two Guernsey politicians are calling for the States to postpone their decision on a planned new waste incinerator. Douzenier Michelle Levrier and Deputy Ann Robilliard have placed a sursis to defer a decision until the Solid Waste Management Plan has been produced.
The pair think the plan, due to come before the House early next year, needs to be discussed before the island commits to a mass burn incinerator.
The delay would allow States members to have all relevant information available to them.
Divert waste
The sursis also calls for the plan to include recommendations for more recycling in order to divert waste from the landfill sites as soon as possible.
They add that the Board of Administration was given the go ahead in 1998 to implement more recycling and composting schemes and argues if it had done this effectively this would have extended the lifespan of the Mont Cuet tip.
Meanwhile, a UK manufacturer says it still wants to be considered to provide a waste incinerator.
Compact Power has written to the States and the parish Douzaines advising of its interest in the project.
It says it made an offer, earlier this year, to provide one its plants at a cost it believes to be substantially cheaper than the scheme being considered.
