Group's plans for island's waste
Rubbish dump
The group's first objective is to replace the incinerator by 2008
An advert is being placed in a European journal to find a replacement for Jersey's Bellozanne incinerator.

The step is being taken by the island's Waste Steering Group to prepare for the island's future waste management.

The steering group has been formed by the Environment and Public Services Committee.

Its members are Deputies Maurice Dubras, Rob Duhammel, Geoffrey Grime and Senator Stuart Syvret.

Multi-million pound project

The group's job will be to come up with a strategy to manage the island's waste for the next 50 years.

Its first objective is to replace the Bellozanne incinerator by the end of 2008.

To find the best alternative, its advertising for interested contractors in the Official Journal of the European Commission which is distributed around Europe.

It says it will consult islanders before making a decision on what is expected to be a multi-million pound capital project

The Environment Committee hopes to present a full waste strategy to the States by the end of the year.
